Obituary for Hugh Walker

On Friday, April 30, 2021, Hugh (Hughie) Walker, loving husband of Pierrette (Pete), father of Jen (Corey Anderson) and Wayne (Kim Fairall), and grandfather of Aislinn Magnussen passed away at age 82.

Hughie was born on February 6th, 1939 in Kilmarnock, Scotland to William Walker and Elizabeth (Kilpatrick). He immigrated to Montreal, Canada with his parents and sister Janet in 1950.

Hughie and Pete met on the slopes of St. Sauveur and upon moving to BC in the late 70’s, spent as much time as they could skiing at Whistler Mountain. Hughie retired in 1994 from Nesbitt Thompson, where he worked for 40 years culminating in a key role managing all trades.

Hughie loved music and was a lifelong athlete. As a boy he was a champion highland dancer, as a young adult he sang as one of the Four Pals and played soccer with the St. Paul Rovers. His passion for skiing was second only to that for golf. He regularly kicked his friends asses at both.

Hughie was known for his humble and patient nature. While he excelled at many things, he never made anyone feel inferior. Hughie was quite simply a joy to be around and one very cool dude.

A celebration of Hughie’s life is being planned. Details will be shared with family and friends as soon as they are determined. Instead of flowers, please consider donations to the Sea-to-Sky Hospice Society, whose compassionate care was outstanding.

Donations in memory of Hugh may be made to The Sea to Sky Hospice Society

My condolences to you Pete. Always enjoyed bumping into you and Hugh when out and about in Whistler. Remember our times playing golf with the Garibaldi Golf Club and how you and Hugh were always fun to have as golf partners.

I will never forget first meeting in the early 70’s Hughie and Pierrette apres ski at the ‘shack’ at the St. Sauveur base – was that at the bottom of hill 70?? They had not been skiing that day as they were new parents and they were showing off their beautiful baby Jennifer to everyone. What a beautfiul first memory I was gifted of these beaming folks cradling their baby! And the memories keep coming….Hughie was just one of the nicest, thoughtful and most loyal friend anyone could have ever had – and how Ronnie admired him so very much. I have attached some photos taken not that long ago when my Montreal buddies visited me at the Gabriola cabin, another cherished memory of being together again! Love you Pierrette, Jenn and Wayne and all the Montreal ‘gang’. Stephanie xoxoxo

Hughie was the best friend we all had because he made you feel you were. So many stories..He was my best man, He was the best guy to ski with, He was great guy to golf with , He was a wonderful guy to be on a road trip with. All this over a 60 year friendship starting in St Sauvier with many other live long friends gathered around a table of gros mols and sadly ending in Whistler. I was fortunate enough to have had many conversations with Hughie nearing the end and he was still filled with grace, kindness and gratitude and I can guarantee like myself looking forward to being with that same table of friends enjoying a gros mol with us all. As Elly says Save a seat at the table..miss you and love you my friend.

Dear Pete
'I was greatly sadden by the news that Hughie had passed away. .
When I last Spoke to Ron Visser, he told me that Hughie was not doing well and was in a great deal of pain. Carol and I would like to extend our condolences to you and your family.
I have fond memories of the many winters we spent as a group sharing a house, skiing and partying. . Hughie and you were part of the wonderful guys and gals that were made up our group and became over time like a family. . Each one of us caring and looking after each other.. These were great times and become more precious to me with the passing of time

May the good Lord look down upon you and your family and comfort you in your time of sorrow.

God Bless

Carol & Gord Hutton
