Obituary

Mary Merchant Sturgeon

It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Mary Merchant Sturgeon on November 21, 2020, in Squamish. She was born on February 29, 1932, in Morristown, New Jersey, and had an exciting early life living abroad as the daughter of a diplomat. She focused her adult years on child and adult education. She is survived by her son Bob (Cheryl), daughter Leslie (Fabio), her brother Livingston (Cigdem), grandchildren Huntington and Bella, daughter-in-law Toshiko, cousins, nieces and nephews, and step-children.

A graduate of Bryn Mawr (1953), life-long lover of writing, and founder of the Santa Cruz Learning Center, Mary moved from California to Vancouver Island with her second husband Harry Sturgeon to continue their professional testing and tutoring services. After a retirement in the Interior, Mary moved to Squamish following Harry’s death ten years ago. She greatly enjoyed living with her son and his family, visiting relatives abroad, and visiting her many favorite lunch spots in the community. She will be greatly missed by her beloved family and the wonderful friends she enjoyed knowing over the course of a full and interesting life. The family would like to thank sincerely Dr Malherbe and the Diamond Head Medical staff, along with Dr Cranston and the wonderful nurses and staff at Hilltop House who supported her peaceful passing.

In lieu of flowers, Mary would have deeply appreciated donations to any charity that may be desired to be made in her name.

All blessings to Mary. She was, for a while, a member of our Quaker Meeting on Vancouver Island, and will be remembered with fondness.

I just discovered Mary's obituary and am so sad to hear the news. I knew Mary when she lived in Naramata. She and I carpooled with others to Kelowna for our Quaker Meeting. She was on my committee of three when I joined the Quakers. Mary always had a million stories to tell, sometimes more than once or twice! She lived an amazing life. Although she had seen lots of hardship, she was a warm, loving presence.
Mary's lovely smile meant that we could never get annoyed with her, even when she was (constantly) late for the carpool. My husband packed her entire collection of books not once but twice within a month or two. It was a pleasure to be in Mary's presence, so he was happy to do it.
We missed Mary very much when she moved to Squamish. She kept in touch by email until recently, often commenting on the goings-on in our Quaker Meeting. We always joked that she was still in her 20's because her birthday was on February 29th.
Thanks for the memories, Mary! You will not be forgotten.

Hi i loved Mary I saw her often walking around the the catholic church and down Friedel Crescent . She was always friendly and smiling . Sometimes I gave her a ride back home from the Anglican church or the store .She loved to have a glass of wine at the restaurant down the hill. I missed seeing her walking down the street and then found out that she had gone to Hilltop So Often we are so busy in our lives that we are planning to visit people and then we are shocked at their passing and wondering why we did not make the time to visit . Mary if you knew it or not I really liked you Please be at peace Love Billie
